Anyone want to know what's on the list for next years book club? After a lot of time and thought I've come up with a list that features both fiction and non-fiction as well as a collection of short stories. I haven't read any (save one) from the books below so there's always the possibility that I missed the mark on one or two. Each book came from a solid recommendation, so I highly doubt you won't find something engaging or interesting with the majority of them and if not, I'd like to hear about that too!
Behold, the 2009 reading list, complete with Amazon links for the lazy shopper (like me):
January: The Zookeeper's Wife by Diane Ackerman
February: Middlesex by Jeffrey Eugenides
March: A Year without Made in China by Sara Bongiorni
April: To Say Nothing of the Dog by Connie Willis
May: The Glass Castle: A Memoir by Jeannette Walls
June: Prodigal Summer by Barbara Kingsolver
July: Into Thin Air by Jon Krakaure
August: Suite Francaise by Irene Nemirovsky
September: The Meaning of Wife by Anne Kingston
October: Snow Flower and the Secret Fan by Lisa See
November: Unaccustomed Earth* by Jhumpa Lahiri
* Currently Unaccustomed Earth is available only in hardback which is one of the reasons I stuck it at the end of the year. I'm hoping by then it'll be in paperback to save everyone a couple dollars!
Our book club meets at a coffee shop and is mostly made up of Mamas, with a few honorary Mamas thrown in for good measure. Last year we made a couple changes to the list after we got started as well as filling in the blanks. I'm hoping to stick with this list all year and deliberately went for books that might incite a little controversy, as those types were the best discussions we had this year. I'm also thinking that we should all bring wine. Seriously, that's the best kind of book club.
What about you? Do you belong to a book club? If so, what are you all reading in 2009? If not, read along with us, I'd love to hear your thoughts!
